With links to the legendary Robin Hood, iconic football boss Brian Clough, as well as boasting an award-winning transport system, the city of Nottingham has shot up through the list of must-see UK destinations over recent years. The East-Midlands city is steeped in history, dating back to Anglo-Saxon times, and there are a plethora of famous tourist hot spots to uncover and other exciting things to do on a day out and it can all be done on a budget.
WOLLATON HALL AND PARK
Nottingham city is not all about the hustle and bustle because there are plenty of picturesque places you can escape to. The beautiful Wollaton Hall and Park, which is spread across more than five hundred acres of stunning parkland, is filled with gardens and grounds for you and the family to explore and enjoy. The hall itself was partially doubled for Wayne Manor in the hit movie ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and the venue also contains Nottingham’s Natural History Museum which is open all year round.
CITY OF CAVES
You may be surprised to learn that Nottingham boasts an incredible network of caves that sit under the streets of the city and they’ve been inhabited for over 1,000 years. These artificial dwellings are carved out of sandstone and the man-made underground labyrinth is now open for special tour parties where you are invited to explore the network and also learn of its origins and history.
SHERWOOD FOREST
This world famous forest has been around since the end of the Ice Age and spans more than 1,000 acres. Famed for being the supposed home of heroic outlaw Robin Hood and his band of merry men, you may recall that the legend has inspired endless movies, TV shows and even a robin hood bingo game and now you can become part of that history by navigating the forest’s various trails and pathways on your visit.
TRENT BRIDGE
It’s widely regarded as one of the best grounds around to enjoy some cricketing action so if you’re lucky enough to be at Trent Bridge for a Test match or a One-day international you will certainly have an unforgettable time. If cricket isn’t your thing then fear not because Nottingham Forest Football Club’s home ground, ‘The City Ground’ is just over the way.
