Best Fly Fishing Spots in the UK

I have always found that the best way to travel was to combine my love for it, with another love of mine. This recipe has taken me on wine tours throughout France, foodie tours through Italy and most recently, a fishing tour through England. I absolutely love to fly fish and for me, the UK in particular has some of the finest places in which to do it, whilst enjoying a pretty fun holiday at the same time. If you love to fish and want to turn it into something of an event, here are my thoughts on the best places to do so inUK.

Cornwall

Fishing holidays in Cornwall are nothing new, they have been the destination for many fishing tourists for a great number of years. For me, this is one of the best spots in the country for fly fishing, especially right down on the southern tip. Last year I stayed at a fabulous camp site, and headed out each day to try out some new spots around Truro, St Ives and Penzance, the Penzance catches being by far the best. If you are heading to Cornwall, I would recommend that you stay in this campsite, the perfect base for your trip.

River Tyne

The River Tyne in Northumberland really has the lot in terms of what you could want from your fishing trip. First of all the scenery here is breathtaking, with the Pennines in clear view, secondly the prices here are far lower than in many places in the country and finally, the numbers of salmon which run into the river each year are simply perfect for those who loved fish.

Dartmoor

Cornwall most certainly doesn’t hold the monopoly on fishing in the south west, and Devon also has some great places where you can enjoy a good day in your waders. Not only is Dartmoor a beautiful corner of the world, the Duchy of Cornwall fishery is so good that it keeps bringing its visitors back year after year. You can get a day pass for this fishery for as little as £10, and there is a huge range of fish to catch from trout, salmon, and just about everything in between.

Strangford Lough

England is not the only place where you’ll find some high quality fly fishing and here in County Down Northern Ireland, you will find some of the best experiences to be had throughout the UK. Just in-land here you will find the best environment to catch mackerel, pollock, haddock, spur dog and wrasse to name just a few. Further inland there are plenty of fisheries which offer huge sea trout as well. This is a beautiful destination for a holiday regardless of the activity, add some fly fishing too and the destination becomes perfect.
