Ever since the Winter Olympics of 1924 in Chamonix, people have been travelling there for decades. They all want to get a piece of some of the best skiing opportunities the area has to offer.
Chamonix is situated in the shadow of the famous Mont Blanc mountain range and is also near the Aiguilles Rouges. It is one of the oldest ski resorts in France.
This picturesque resort is comprised of 16 villages and hamlets. While Mont Blanc is the tallest mountain to the West of Russia, it gets a lot of hikers during the Summer season, but it’s real attraction is the skiing.
There is a cable car in one of the Chamonix resorts that goes to the top of the Aiguille du Midi. You then have the option of skiing back down the slopes known as the “needle of the south”, or get the cable car back down again if that’s your thing.
The cable car itself was designed and built in 1955 and for two decades was the highest in the world. Today, it stills has the record of the steepest cable car climb.
The five resorts in the Chamonix area all offer spectacular slopes of varying slopes and routes that will appeal to not only complete beginners, but also to seasoned hard core skiers. One of the most famous resorts there is Vallee Blanche, which provides a route that will challenge even the best slope surgeons out there. The route itself is 17 km long and has a vertical descent of 2,800 meters. If you think you are geared up for the challenge of taking on this route, then a guide is highly recommended.
If you want to get a transfer from Geneva to Chamonix then do a search for Chamonix first online. They offer excellent value when it comes to getting you to your resort from the airport.
For those of you that like to do some ski touring around the place, then Chamonix has everything that you will need. Ski touring is best tried during the Spring months as it will provide the best weather in order to enjoy the experience as well as appreciate the sights and sounds around the slopes. This time of year is an excellent time to slope from town to town, relax and have a coffee, before you ski on towards the next little stop.
The Haute route links Chamonix with Zermatt(in Switzerland) and takes about five days to complete. This a very attractive route, but you will need to have a guide with you for the duration of the journey.
