The UK has a wide range of holiday destinations that can be enjoyed throughout the year, from rolling hills and moors to windswept beaches and magnificent lakes. For dog owners, an increasing number of hotels are allowing pets to stay. It used to be the reserve of caravan parks and mobile homes, but now it is possible to stay in four or even five star luxury along with your dog.
Cumbria is a particularly popular destination with dog owners, as the impressive scenery provides endless walking and hiking opportunities. Lake Windermere (right) is a spectacular place to visit, and is the UK’s largest natural lake, with a range of activities to enjoy. There are plenty of hotels in Windermere that will accept dogs, and looking online is a great way to find establishments that are dog-friendly.
Most hotels will offer guidelines for bringing your dog, but always check by ringing first if there is not enough information on a hotel website. Some hotels include an extra charge for bringing your dog, and you may be restricted to how many pets you can bring (usually around two). There may also be rules regarding where you can and cannot take your dog, and all dogs will of course need collars and leads. Look for a hotel that has easy access to the surrounding area: lakes, moors and beaches are great places for dogs (and their owners!) to exhaust themselves, so make sure you won’t have to spend hours in the car to reach the great outdoors. Before you go away, pack a good range of toys and treats to keep your dog happy and well behaved. Some familiar bedding, blankets and food will be needed, and it is also worth taking a brush and towel – if only to save your car upholstery after a day of running around in the sand and surf! Before you set off for your holiday, take your dog for a long walk (particularly if you are going to be travelling a long distance). This will allow your dog to relax in the car, and possibly even sleep during the journey, keeping things smooth and simple for the start of your break!
