Tenerife is the ideal destination for anyone who likes to get active while on holiday. Its location in the Atlantic Ocean ensures a temperate climate all-year round. Enough sunshine to be pleasant, but also not so hot that it is difficult to find the energy to do anything – simply perfect.
Hiking in TenerifeThe landscape is also stunning, meaning you will have the opportunity to take in the beauty of nature while carrying out whichever activity you have chosen. From high mountains to turquoise seas, Tenerife welcomes you to its playground.
You will want to check out the differing vistas of Mount Teide National Park, the pine forests of La Corona and the laurisilva forests in the rural parks of Anaga during your stay. With so much to do, we had better get started with our round up, but you can find out more to help plan your trip .
Hiking
There are plenty of walking trails across the island, but many people decide to take on the biggest challenge of them all: Mount Teide. Most visitors don’t realise that Spain’s highest mountain is on Tenerife until they get here, and then they can’t help but climb it.
Right in the middle of a national park bearing the same name, this impressive geographical feature stretches 3,718 metres into the air. It is actually a volcano, but there is no fear of an imminent eruption as it has been dormant since 1909.
Picking a route up to the peak couldn’t be easier and the three main options – The Rambleta; Pico Vieja; and La Fortaleza – are all well publicised. Either join an organised tour or put your navigational skills to the test and follow a map.
Cycling
To mix things up a bit, why not swap your walking boots for a mountain bike? It is prohibited to ride on the trains within the Teide National Park, but this presents visitors with a whole new opportunity to explore different parts of the island.
The Corona forest is the area surrounding the national park and has all the infrastructure in place for cyclists to make the most of their trip. Breath in the smell of the pine trees as you venture deep into the woods on a comprehensive network of trails.
Fishing
Fishing is a very popular activity in Tenerife – after all, being an island it is surrounded by sea and this water is teaming with life. It is entirely up to you the type of fishing that you would like to undertake, with plenty of companies offering yacht charters and organised tours.
If you have never fished before or are keen to get the kids excited about the prospect of catching sea creatures then perhaps think about fishing with lighter tackle. This is much more relaxed and means that you are likely to catch quite a few small fish.
Children really appreciate the chance to see the fruits of their labour and there is less waiting around when you are targeting small fish, as there are simply more of them out there to be caught.
For other people, Tenerife means big game fishing, which involves targeting the bigger species like barracuda, marlin, dorado, tuna and even sharks. It can take much longer to get a bite with this type of fishing, but it is very satisfying when you do.
Whichever option you choose, be sure to seek out a company that specialises in this side of the sport in order to get the most out of your excursion.
