Golf is certainly one of the most popular pastimes in the world today but I must admit it is not my cup of tea (no pun intended). I did try it once with a few of my friends who are avid participators in the sport but after losing twelve balls after the first nine holes I decided the best place for me to spend my time was in the 19th hole. However, this does not deter me from going with my friends on their golfing exploits. They particularly like to take golf holidays in Cornwall in the Southwest of England so, with extensive research carried out by myself from the 19th hole, these are some of the best, according to my friends, the best links to be found in this region of England.
In no particular order, they tell me that the course at Newquay is pretty nice as it overlooks the beach at Fistral and is pretty tricky to play as there are quite a few bunkers that need to be avoided. Another is the point at Polzeath which has been extensively overhauled recently, making it one of the best courses in the region.
The most southerly course in the UK is Mullion and the green fees are pretty reasonable as well, from around thirty pounds a day. Depending on how long it takes you to get round, you can see some great sunsets over the bay there. Another course worthy of mention that holds some pretty good tournaments is Trevose. It holds the Brabazon Trophy and also national county finals so is obviously a quality course.
West Cornwall golf club, which incidentally is the oldest club in the county can be quite a difficult course to play. Getting to the greens is not so difficult, but apparently the greens are pretty undulating so making the final put is not as easy as it looks. Finally, the Merlin golf and country club is one of my personal favorites because it is a hilltop course that overlooks the North Cornish coast. The reason I like this one is because it has a nice new patio area at the 18th hole where I can sit and drink a nice pint of beer and wait for my friends to finish knocking balls around a large piece of grass!
