New York is arguably the most exciting city in the United States, and there’s more to see and do than most families will be able to in a few days. If you’re going to New York, you’ll want to try to plan for at least four or five days, otherwise you may end up missing out on a lot of the sights that you want to see.

While New York is certainly an exciting city, it can be very expensive. If you’re staying for more than a day or two, hotel costs alone will likely eat up a lot of your budget. However, there are some ways you can visit New York with your family without breaking the bank, while still making the experience one you won’t forget.

Use Public Transportation

New York has one of the most well-developed public transportation systems in the world. When you’re a tourist in the city, using the subway is by far the most cost effective way to get around. Taxicabs are great if you’re really in a hurry to make a show or dinner reservation, but they’re going to cost you a lot more per trip, especially in buys areas where traffic will really run the fare up. Grab a subway map on your first day and try to utilize the subway whenever possible. You’ll have more money to do fun things with your family.

Food

When you have to feed a family three times per day, food costs can really add up when you’re on vacation. If you can, get a hotel room with a kitchen so you can cook at least one of your meals each day. That will save you a ton of money. If you can’t get a room with a kitchen, ask locals about places they like to eat on a regular basis. Locals will be able to make recommendations about where you can get a great meal for the family without breaking a $100. Don’t forget, New York is home to some of the best hot dog shops in the world, and many of the restaurants in Little Italy and Chinatown are surprisingly affordable, despite how good their food is.

Broadway

When many people think of New York, they likely think of the glitz and glamor of Broadway. While Broadway shows can be expensive, you may be able to find bargains if you buy your tickets in advance or the day of the show – assuming there are any tickets left. If you can’t afford to see a Broadway show with your whole family, a guided tour of the area is a great way to learn a little bit of the history of the area without spending a ton of money. Even people that aren’t theatre buffs should take the time to see Broadway when they’re in New York City.

Radio City

Radio City, often referred to as the showplace of the nation in its heyday, is one of the leading tourist attractions in New York. When you visit New York, you have to see Radio City – it’s a part of the nation’s history. If you visit Radio City during the holidays, try to get Radio City Christmas Spectacular Tickets – New York City’s biggest holiday event. Tickets can be very affordable if you buy in advance.

Carnegie Hall

Carnegie Hall is a famous, world-class music venue in Midtown Manhattan, and it’s an absolute must visit destination when you’re in New York. Carnegie Hall runs shows year round, and some of them are even geared toward a family audience. If you aren’t going to a show at Carnegie Hall, you can see it and Central Park, which is only two blocks away, on the same day.
