People who are interested in the history of Denmark should take a trip to the town of Roskilde, which is home to the Viking Ship Museum. Nearby Jelling features two enormous Viking burial mounds and once served as the final resting place of King Gorm.

Literary lovers will want to follow in the footsteps of famous Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen by taking a trip to the island of Funen. This picturesque island was the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen and visitors will be able to explore his childhood home, which has now been turned into a museum. The H.C. Andersens Hus also contains a large collection of memorabilia that once belonged to the great writer and should not be missed, while walking along the traditional cobblestone streets of Funen and soaking up the atmosphere is a real treat.

Denmark is also famous for its magnificent castles, many of which can be reached on a short daytrip from Copenhagen. One of the most enchanting of these is the Hillerod-Frederiksborg Slot, which is located just a short drive to the northwest of Copenhagen on the edge of a large lake. The island of Funen is home to Egeskov Castle, which is situated in a stunning 15-hectare park that comes complete with a 200-year-old maze.

The alternative community of Christiana can be reached on foot from the heart of Copenhagen in less than half an hour, which makes it a popular daytrip destination among visitors who do not have their own transportation. This laidback community was established as a suburb of Copenhagen in the 17th century and can be found just across the Inderhavnen waterway. While Christiana is home to the Royal Danish Naval Museum, most people visit the commune to witness the alternative lifestyles of the people who live there in their self-made shacks, purchase handicrafts and simply soak up the atmosphere before heading back to the hustle and bustle of the big city.
