Saving Money While On the Road

Traveling is truly a mind blowing and enlightening experience for many people. It is something that everyone should experience at some point in his or her life. There is nothing that compares to learning about a new culture first hand and learning something about yourself in the process. While many people would love to travel they often don’t. This can be for a number of reasons. But what seems to be the most used reason and the number one reason is money. The truth of the matter is that traveling doesn’t have to cost a lot of money and here are a few tips that will help you stretch your dollar farther while you’re on the road. Before I get into the money saving tips you should never forget that you can work online whilst on the road, you can write or even sell things, if you have something you want to sell you can sell it online here.

Watch What You Eat

If you regularly go out to restaurants for your meals you will be spending loads of cash that would be better suited elsewhere. There are a few simple things you can do to cut down on the cost of food while traveling. One thing you can do is eat at food trucks and food carts. These tend to be extremely cheaper than eating in a restaurant. Eat breakfast at your hotel or hostel. Many include a free breakfast. You can also buy bread and lunch meat to make sandwiches. This is easier if you are staying in a place with a fridge.

Stay at Hostels and Home Stays

Avoid hotels the best that you can. Hostels are always almost the cheapest option, especially when it comes to solo travel. This is also a great place to get free information on what things to do while you’re traveling. Not only will the desk have pamphlets for you, but also you’ll meet fellow travelers who have already done some exploring. If you’re with a group check out home stays where you can rent apartments or rooms in homes for a day or two at a time.

Use Public Transportation and Walk A Lot

Taxis are the most expensive way to get around the city. Look into bus passes, train passes, and try to walk everywhere that you need to go. For a few dollars you can travel across an entire city for an entire day for the price of what one cab ride might cost. If in a group, it may be cheaper to take a taxi when splitting the fare and this also will depend on what city you’re in.

Get A Credit Card With Rewards

This is a very underrated and underused technique for travelers. If you can buy everything on a credit card and have that money turned into miles you can save tons of money on an airplane ticket. Many banks will offer things like aeroplan points with their credit cards. If you can save and cut out the cost of a flight, then you’ll be a few steps ahead of the game when it comes to stretching your dollars.
