Sarah's site is great, especially since it can be daunting to volunteer abroad at first. It's something I'm looking to do more of as I travel and Volunteering Global is a great resource.

Hi Emily,
As always ~ great points here. I think it is essential to give young 20 somethings the perspective that you don't always have to travel for leisure; it can also be done to serve the greater good. I recently read a post from the Thunderbird University blog (highly acclaimed International Management & Business MBA university) blog that reiterates a speech given to their students by the Dali Lama a few years back. His key point was that as a global citizen, we need to help one another succeed. That is how a global leader is born. Great final question btw. It is so important to have some sort of filter for scams - particularly when choosing a volunteer position in a foreign country.

Cheers!

Great post!

It is hard to find legitimate and inexpensive volunteering options. It is good to hear from an expert. My wife and I would love to volunteer, but at $1000 a week for some of these programs it is too expensive. It would make more sense to just donate that money to charity.
