Smailholm Tower in the Scottish Borders

I took this photo of Smailholm Tower while exploring the Scottish Borders (the area near Scotland’s border with England). The stunning four-story tower is located in the countryside about five miles west of Kelso. It was built sometime in the 15th or 16th century.

Novelist and poet Sir Walter Scott often visited Smailholm Tower during his childhood, as his paternal grandfather lived here. It was passed through several different families over the centuries, but it is now a museum.
