Iconic Sites to Visit Before 2017’s Out

How many of the iconic landmarks in the world have you seen?  If your answer is zero then 2017 is a great year for you to get moving and travel.   Be prepared to be awestruck as seeing them in person is nothing like viewing a photo.  Here are the six that you should see this year.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, in Pisa, Italy one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.  It is a bell tower that was constructed during the medieval time period.  It was constructed on ground that was too soft so the tower began leaning during construction.   It has continued to fall at a rate of about 2 metres annually.

Sydney Harbour

No trip to Australia is complete without spending time in Sydney Harbour.  The Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Steel Bridge are iconic landmarks that people from all over the world flock to see.  You can take a cruise around the harbour or you can visit the lookout on the bridge.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is one of the 7 Wonders of the World and is a must-see on a holiday to Peru.  This 15th century Incan citadel is located at 2430 metres above sea level.  You can get to it by hiking up the Inca trail that meanders through the Andes mountain Range.  There are many trails to choose from and they all offer glorious sites like small villages, and beautiful scenery.  The trail is only open to a certain number of people at a time so you must book ahead of time.  Don’t make plans to do the trip in February as the trail is closed for annual maintenance.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge is a rock formation in Wiltshire, England that was constructed over 5,000 years ago.  The tallest of the stones are over 9 meters tall and this mammoth stone structure is still shrouded in a cloud of mystery.  No one has discovered for what purpose it was built, however there are plenty of theories.  Wiltshire can be reached easily from London and the trip takes about two hours by car or bus.

The Pyramids of Giza

There are over one hundred pyramids in Egypt that were built as tombs for pharaohs.  It is still not fully understand how buildings of such a grand scale were constructed.   Three of the most famous pyramids:  Pyramid of Menkaure, Pyramid of Khafre and Great Pyramid of Khufu can be found just outside of Cairo. Explore the marvel of these structures and view the stunning Great Sphinx

The Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower in Paris is one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. It may be the first attraction you visit once you hop out of your taxi from the airport.  It has towered over the Paris city skyline since 1887 when it was built as an entrance to the World Fair.  Over seven million people visit this tower each annually. There are three floors for visitors to explore.  The second floor houses a restaurant and the third floor has an observation deck that allows you to see the lovely city from a bird’s eye view.
