So great to hear that you found these ‘rules’ applicable to your travels. It’s funny how quantifying these rules seems challenging because for the most part they are part of our common sense. I do understand though that common sense varies from country to country and culture to culture. So glad to hear that you had a good time in Cartagena. I have spent many summers there and always had a blast. Colombia is not nearly as bad as people think it is. (On the upside, it makes for a hidden South American gem!)

I agree with these no-nonsense golden rules completely, many of them are word for word what my parents taught me from a baby since I’ve been expatting since around 4. And recently as a young adult traveling I rely on “common” sense travel rules, especially Poker Face! We just came back from spending three months in Colombia, and though we found it surprisingly safer (in Cartagena) than expected these rules helped keep a lot of street peddelers from mugging us.
