Great interview – thanks for sharing. “Burnout doesn’t come from traveling, it comes from the speed at which you travel. I find myself traveling slower and slower. If you take your time, you can avoid burnout.” I love that.

@B.Traveller–I’m totally guilty of those speed-trips. Last summer, it was three Europe countries in two weeks. The summer before, it was four countries in two weeks!! I was just so excited to go to Europe that I felt like I had to squeeze in as much as possible (I would have stayed longer, but couldn’t due to work). After reflecting on those whirlwind experiences and listening to people like Gary, I think I definitely need to start traveling slower.

I like his advice about burnout. It’s all about the speed at which you travel, not the overall distance. I hear about people doing these “Europe Trips” in 2 weeks and they’re seeing 10 countries, it’s just nuts! People would do much better to savor their time in one place for a little while.

And the bit about media was an excellent point, too. News amps up the drama to sell ad dollars, no other way around it.

“The world is very different from the view you get sitting on your couch watching TV. The media puts a sensational spin on things to get viewers.” I completely agree with this comment, I think the media are getting worse as well!

I love the answer to favorite place. I always have such a hard time with that question even from my more limited travels since the experiences and people are so unique from place to place, it’s hard to choose just one!

Great interview. “Like jumping into cold water, you just have to do it” is so spot on. Making that mental jump is the most important bit. People seem to have a really hard time making that leap of faith to leave their jobs and normal lives, but based on all the examples I’ve seen, the rewards are so so great.
